• How Do Current Storage Trends Impact the Ordinary Man?

I previously mentioned three current technology trends and I want to look at each as it impacts the ordinary man/woman: Cloud, Big Data and long term archiving.

Cloud is a marketing term defined by different companies depending on their self-interest. You can trust me, I’m in marketing. Basically, it means renting services on-line rather than owning them. It is usually represented as an acronym ending in -aaS “as a service” not to be confused with ‘ass’.

Infrastructure or Platform as a service (Iaas,PaaS) refers to renting computing power by the milligram and is not relevant to you or me. If I want to know what day my birthday will fall on in the first year of my pension, I don’t need to call on CSIRO supercomputing resources to find out. My laptop or ipad can do it, my phone can do it, hell, my toothbrush can probably do it.

Software as a service (SaaS) sounds more useful. If I only need to pixilate one photo for my extortion attempt I don’t need to pay $1500 for a copy of Photoshop. However, so many nerds are now writing iPhone apps for $1.99 you can achieve most ends very cheaply. I can’t see me ever again giving $200 to Microsoft for a word processor when I can get Polaris, Google Docs or Pages almost free.

Storage as a service (STaaS) is a different matter. We are creating massive amounts of data (crap) and we don’t want to lose it. Why not let someone else look after it? Well – maybe. Catch me next time.
