• Online Training Gets a Permanent Boost from the Recession

During the recession, many IT companies replaced location-based training events with less costly web tools and eLearning programs.  As budgets recover, online training is poised to remain the prevailing training method with a host of surprising new benefits such as greater product adoption, training customization, global reach and improved channel partner engagement.

A survey of 1,100 businesses by Citrix Online and Kelton Research showed 89% planned to spend more money on training than travel in 2010.  This trend is especially apparent in the curriculums within the global training programs of IT giants Oracle Corporation (Oracle University), EMC (EMC Education Services) and Symantec (Symantec Education).

Increased Product Adoption.  Online sessions facilitate product adoption and reduce, or even possibly eliminate, the high costs of travel and training by integrating the elements and resources of the traditional classroom.  Web tools handle registration, headcount tracking, hands-on lab time, breakout sessions, presentation and demonstration capabilities, testing and grading.  Low-cost online meetings make it easy for users to repeat training sessions for those who may have missed something the first time, catch up on missed sessions or have more questions after using the product.

Customized, Self-Paced Training.  Instead of one day-long training session, companies are creating multiple, shorter modules to be culled from the same course material.  Training is customized for one-to-one or one-to-many training situations through recorded or real-time presentations.  Sessions can be posted online and used as refresher training sessions, and offered to customers who can reuse training content for easy and efficient new hire training.

Geographic Reach.  Online training allows companies to reach a global audience without travel and customizable by language and time-zone.

Better Accommodate Partners.  Online meetings are no longer taboo for reseller and distribution partners who appreciate the efficiency of online and self-paced training.

Online training is the new paradigm while location-based events are becoming more of a luxury.  Tell us your online vs. location-based training mix and if you agree with this trend.
